The Jovial Crew

Joyous, life affirming and more than just a bit daft.....

A group of people who get together from time to time for song, dance and performing plays.   The Jovial Crew are resident performers at the Folk of Gloucester.

Song, Dance and Drama

Have you ever wanted to be in an band, act in a play or dance in the street?    If you have, then the Jovial Crew is for you.

The Jovial Crew is a group of consenting adults who like to have a good time.   We perform at festivals and events throughout Gloucestershire.   We have performed at events such as Gloucester Folk Festival, Stroud Wassail, Apple Day, the 1315 procession and Gloucester goes retro.

We sing songs from the great heritage of English folk song.   Timeless classics such as "The Cream of Society", "Joan's Ale Was New" and "John Barleycorn".   We also sing Music Hall songs such as "There was I waiting at the church" and "I'm Henry the Eighth I am".

We do traditional dances, with and without our beasts.   And we perform mummers plays.

So if you are an amateur singer, musician, dancer or actor (or if you would like to be one), drop me, Robin Burton a line.   No experience necessary... in fact probably a good idea if you don't have any experience!

Our Songs

  • When Joan's Ale Was New:    A song about one of our favourite subjects.... beer.
  • Cream of Society:   A song about the high quality of the people who live near us...
  • The Keeper:   A song about the sexual conquests of a famous King of England
  • Shurdington Wassail:  Our cup it is white and our ale it is brown
  • Let Union Be:  We'll end the day as we've begun, we'll end it all in pleasure...
  • Waiting at the Church:   Well.... he left me in the lurch....
  • O Dear O:   Suggested by one of our female members.   A complaint about a husband's performance
